Self Defense Fundamentals

Our Self Defense Fundamentals program integrates cardio-intensive training with the most modern self-defense methods drawn from MMA and Krav Maga. Designed to be intuitive and effective under pressure, it helps students develop both mentally and physically so they can protect themselves, their loved ones, and the people around them with calm, decisive action.

About the program

Krav Maga is a self-defense system built for the real world — it does not rely on size or strength, and it emphasizes instinctive responses you can use under stress. Our classes combine demanding conditioning with practical technique, building awareness, confidence, and control. It is one of our most popular programs and offers structured progression through every level.

Principles and Practices

At its core, self-defense is more than a collection of techniques—it is a mindset. Black House emphasizes several key principles:

  • Situational Awareness: Recognize potential threats and avoid dangerous situations whenever possible.
  • De-Escalation: Use diplomacy, communication, and strategic avoidance to prevent conflict.
  • Proportional Response: Understand when physical defense is necessary and apply appropriate techniques.
  • Tactical Execution: Employ strikes, blocks, joint controls, and escapes effectively to neutralize threats and create an opportunity to safely exit.

By combining these principles with practical martial arts skills, students gain the confidence and ability to handle real-world situations effectively.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Black House's business and programs.

How should I prepare for my first class?

Wear comfortable workout clothes. Most students train barefoot, but you can wear socks if you prefer. Bring a water bottle and hydrate before class. Eat before training, but allow an hour to digest before class. Inform the instructor of any injuries or specific needs before class. Have fun!

What if I'm not in great shape?

“If you come to class, you have succeeded.” There is no weeding-out process. Very few students enter the school in the shape they want to be in. Everyone participates at their own level. Your strength, endurance, and self-defense skills will naturally improve as you continue training. If you need to step out during class, that’s fine. We encourage you to continue, but there is no pressure to perform.

I have some martial arts experience.

Black House welcomes experienced martial artists and respects all arts and instructors. We encourage you to try a few classes with us and let the manager and instructors know about your prior training.

I'm over 50. How will I keep up with younger students?

Congratulations on taking the first step! Martial arts training is for everyone. Many of our students are over 50, and you’ll find that all students show respect and kindness in class. To prepare, stretch before and after class, and be sure to hydrate!

Do men and women train together?

Yes. Men and women train side by side in a focused, respectful environment. Many women especially enjoy our Self Defense classes, but we have many training in our Muay Thai and MMA programs as well!

Which program is right for me?

It depends on your goals — MMA, Muay Thai, Self Defense, and fitness each offer something different. We encourage cross-training, and we are happy to help you choose during your free trial classes.

What ages do you teach?

We offer programs for kids (5-8), youth (9-12), teens, and adults, with level-based tracks from basic through advanced and masters.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in, and bring water. We will guide you on any specific gear once you get started.

Can I try a class before signing up?

Yes. We offer two free trial classes for adults, teens, youth, and kids so you can experience our training before committing.

Do I need any experience to start?

Not at all. Many of our students begin as complete beginners. Every program has basic-level classes designed to welcome newcomers, and our instructors will help you learn at your own pace.
