Kali Martial Arts
Kali combines traditional Filipino martial arts principles with modern training methods. Students learn how to use weapons safely, integrate open-hand techniques, and enhance their MMA, Kickboxing, or Krav Maga skills. Our classes emphasize control, timing, and fluidity, making them applicable in real-world scenarios as well as in structured training environments.
About The Program
You'll build real skill through structured drills, partner exercises, and controlled sparring, progressing safely from your first class to advanced technique. Along the way you'll sharpen your coordination, timing, and situational awareness, developing the kind of practical ability that carries over well beyond the mat.
Core Training Components for Kali
Our Kali instruction covers all ranges of combat, emphasizing both weapons and empty-hand techniques. Classes focus on coordination, timing, and practical application for self-defense and cross-training. Key components include:
- Filipino Boxing (Panantukan): Punches, elbows, and close-range strikes with focus on accuracy and speed.
- Kicking (Sikaran): Low, mid, and high kicks using proper hip rotation and footwork.
- Grappling (Dumog): Clinches, takedowns, and control techniques adapted from Filipino wrestling principles.
- Weapons Training: Single and double sticks, knives, swords, and improvised objects; techniques focus on defense and counterattack.
- Defensive Tactics: Blocks, parries, the “wall of defense,” and situational awareness for practical self-protection.
- Conditioning and Footwork: Agility, endurance, and strength training to move efficiently in all ranges of combat.
- Mindset and Strategy: Timing, control, focus, and situational awareness to respond effectively under pressure.
All techniques are practiced in structured drills, partner exercises, and controlled sparring. Classes are designed to safely progress students from beginner to advanced levels while developing practical combat and self-defense skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Black House's business and programs.
Do I need any experience to start?
Not at all. Many of our students begin as complete beginners. Every program has basic-level classes designed to welcome newcomers, and our instructors will help you learn at your own pace.
Can I try a class before signing up?
Yes. We offer two free trial classes for adults, teens, youth, and kids so you can experience our training before committing.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in, and bring water. We will guide you on any specific gear once you get started.
What ages do you teach?
We offer programs for kids (5-8), youth (9-12), teens, and adults, with level-based tracks from basic through advanced and masters.
Which program is right for me?
It depends on your goals — MMA, Muay Thai, Self Defense, and fitness each offer something different. We encourage cross-training, and we are happy to help you choose during your free trial classes.
Do men and women train together?
Yes. Men and women train side by side in a focused, respectful environment. Many women especially enjoy our Self Defense classes, but we have many training in our Muay Thai and MMA programs as well!
How should I prepare for my first class?
Wear comfortable workout clothes. Most students train barefoot, but you can wear socks if you prefer. Bring a water bottle and hydrate before class. Eat before training, but allow an hour to digest before class. Inform the instructor of any injuries or specific needs before class. Have fun!
What if I'm not in great shape?
“If you come to class, you have succeeded.” There is no weeding-out process. Very few students enter the school in the shape they want to be in. Everyone participates at their own level. Your strength, endurance, and self-defense skills will naturally improve as you continue training. If you need to step out during class, that’s fine. We encourage you to continue, but there is no pressure to perform.
I have some martial arts experience.
Black House welcomes experienced martial artists and respects all arts and instructors. We encourage you to try a few classes with us and let the manager and instructors know about your prior training.
I'm over 50. How will I keep up with younger students?
Congratulations on taking the first step! Martial arts training is for everyone. Many of our students are over 50, and you’ll find that all students show respect and kindness in class. To prepare, stretch before and after class, and be sure to hydrate!
